UAE cracks down amid US-Iran war: Orders arrest of 35 people, including 19 Indians, accused of spreading fake videos on social media
Dubai. Amid rising tensions in the Middle East and recent developments related to Iran, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has taken major action against the spread of misleading and fake content on social media. The UAE administration has issued arrest orders for 35 people, including 19 Indian nationals, accused of sharing false and misleading video clips on social media platforms.
According to information released by UAE's official news agency Emirates News Agency (WAM), all these accused will soon be produced in court for speedy trial.
The arrested accused worked in three different groups.
United Arab Emirates Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi said that during monitoring of digital platforms and electronic investigation, it was found that the accused were working in three different groups and were involved in different types of activities.
Investigation revealed that the accused were mainly involved in three types of activities-
Posting real video clips of current events on social media to mislead people. Also, using artificial intelligence (AI) to create fake and fabricated videos and make them viral by claiming they are real, thereby misleading people.
The aim is to praise the aggressor country and promote its leadership and military action. The UAE administration says such activities are considered attempts to disrupt public order and undermine social stability, and therefore strict measures are being taken against them.
This incident is not the first, a list has been issued in the past as well.
The United Arab Emirates has previously taken action against those attempting to defraud the public, but now, according to reports, the latest list released on Saturday includes the names of 25 new suspects, including 17 Indian citizens. The previous list contained 10 names, including two Indians. In total, 35 people, including 19 Indians, have been ordered arrested.
Iran war: Strict action amid regional tensions
The UAE's actions to protect national security come at a time when the world is discussing the escalating tensions between Iran, Israel, and the United States in the Middle East. Officials say such misleading content could further escalate regional tensions, so social media is being closely monitored. Strict action is being taken against those who share misleading posts or videos.
Warning of future action by UAE authorities
Taking precautions to protect national security, the UAE government has clarified that sharing fake news, edited videos, or misleading content generated by AI is a serious offense. Those found guilty in such cases could face fines, imprisonment, or both.
The administration has appealed to citizens and foreigners to refrain from sharing any unverified or misleading information on social media, as it may affect the security and social peace of the country.
