A landmark project in the field of water management and infrastructure is taking shape in Rajasthan. The country's largest aqueduct (water bridge) is being built over the Chambal River, a feat of engineering excellence. This ambitious project is under construction near Guhata village in Bundi district and, upon completion, will provide a significant boost to the state's water supply system.
Under this project, a massive structure is being built to channel water from the Navnera Barrage to the Mej Dam, where the water will flow approximately 30 meters above the Chambal River. This is unique, as water is typically channeled below or at the same level as rivers, but here the water will flow above the river.
This will be the cost and size
Approximately 2,300 crore rupees are being spent on the construction of this massive aqueduct. Its total length is approximately 2.28 kilometers and width is 45 meters, making it the largest aqueduct in the country. This project marks the first such massive water structure in Rajasthan.
How is this huge structure being built?
Construction is currently progressing rapidly, utilizing modern technologies. A total of 5,060 reinforced foundations are being constructed, upon which 450 massive pillars will be erected. Special troughs (water-carrying structures) will be installed on top of these pillars in 76 sections.
The special feature is that the trough and pillar parts are being prepared in advance and brought to the site and fitted, making the construction faster and more robust.
250 cubic meters of water flow in one second
This aqueduct will be able to transport approximately 250 cubic meters of water per second, which will significantly help meet irrigation, drinking water, and other water needs.
water as well as road
Another significant feature of this project is the construction of an 8-meter-wide road alongside it. This means that not only will water flow over this structure, but vehicles will also be able to pass through it easily. This will also significantly improve local connectivity.
What is an aqueduct
An aqueduct is a specialized type of bridge used to carry water over a river, valley, or other obstruction. It is primarily used in canal systems to allow the flow of water to continue uninterrupted.
Why is this project special for Rajasthan?
This project is not just an engineering feat, but will also be a game-changer for Rajasthan's water management system. It will expand irrigation areas, improve water availability, and strengthen road connectivity.
This aqueduct, being built with modern technology, will play an important role in the development of the state in the coming years and will create its own identity among the major infrastructure projects of the country.
