A major change has come into effect for highway travelers across the country starting April 10th. The National Highways Authority of India has decided to eliminate cash payments at toll plazas, taking a step toward making the toll collection system completely digital. Motorists will now be required to use FASTag or digital means to pay toll taxes.
What is the new rule?
According to the new rule, cash payments will no longer be accepted at any toll plaza. This decision was taken to make traffic faster and more transparent.
How to make payment if you don't have FASTag?
If your vehicle does not have a FASTag or it is not working, you will have the option of digital payment:
You can pay toll tax through UPI
But for this you will have to pay 25% extra fee.
Example: For a toll of ₹100, you will have to pay ₹125.
This means that travelling without FASTag is going to be expensive now.
What if I don't have both FASTag and UPI?
If you don't have a FASTag and can't make digital payments:
You will not be allowed to cross the toll plaza
Toll staff may stop you.
An e-notice may be issued in your name
How will e-notice and penalty be imposed?
If you didn't pay on the spot:
You will receive an e-notice of the outstanding toll.
Payment must be made within 3 days
If the toll is not paid within 3 days, the toll amount will be doubled .
How to avoid trouble?
Get FASTag installed on your vehicle right away
If already registered, get its KYC updated.
Keep FASTag active and in sufficient balance
Why was this decision taken?
To eliminate long lines at toll plazas
To promote Digital India
To bring transparency in toll collection
Now, before traveling on the highway, it's crucial to ensure your FASTag is active. Cash is no longer an option under the new rules, and traveling without digital payments can be both difficult and expensive.
