Jaipur: Uncertainty seems to be brewing regarding the upcoming Panchayat elections in Rajasthan. Holding Panchayat elections before April 15th is considered difficult in the state, as the situation regarding Other Backward Class (OBC) reservations remains unclear. Determining reservations is impossible without the OBC Commission's report, which is delaying the announcement of the election schedule. If Panchayat elections are not held on time, thousands of Gram Panchayats in the state could suffer financial and administrative losses.
Central funds worth Rs 1,900 crore are likely to be blocked.
According to experts, if the Panchayat elections are not held on time , the financial grant of approximately ₹1,900 crore from the central government could be affected. This amount is allocated for rural development and infrastructure projects. The lack of an elected Panchayat structure could hinder the utilization and distribution of these funds.

OBC reservation became the main reason
The state government is awaiting the commission's report to implement OBC reservations in Panchayat elections. According to Supreme Court directives , a triple test process is mandatory for determining reservations. This involves data on backward classes, the commission's recommendations, and the allocation of seats based on these criteria. Until this process is completed, it is not possible to issue the election notification.
Many important schemes may be affected.
If Panchayat elections are not held on time, many ongoing schemes in rural areas could be affected. These include:
Rural Road and Infrastructure Development Schemes
Drinking water and sanitation projects
Panchayat level development plans and local budget work
Implementation of schemes related to social security and rural employment
In the absence of elected Panchayat representatives, administrative difficulties in implementing these schemes may increase.
pressure on the administrative system
If elections are postponed, administrators may have to be appointed in many panchayats. This could slow down the decision-making process at the local level. Public representatives play a crucial role in rural development, so delaying elections could put additional pressure on the administrative system.
The government and the Election Commission are keeping an eye on the report
Both the state government and the Election Commission are now closely monitoring the OBC Commission's report. Once the report is submitted to the government, reservations can be determined based on it and the election schedule can be announced.
At present, the situation regarding Panchayat elections is not clear, but if the delay is prolonged, it can have a direct impact on rural development and the central funds received by the Panchayats.
